The average American has a 1 in 90 chance of having twins (no fertility drugs). Your chance of having them is only slightly better. The every-other-generation thing has to do with your father. If your grandmother had a hyperovulating gene and your father inherited it, and then you inherited it, then you have a much higher chance of having twins. However, this is not the case in the direct maternal line. If your mom's generation did not have twins, then it was just coincidence that there are multiple twins in your family. Maybe something in the water...who knows.

In my family, there are NO multiples to moms under 38. However, moms 38 or over, ALL have multiples (twins, triplets and quads). So, even though there were multiple multiples in my family, age (and obesity apparently) were factors here, not an inherited tendency.
References :
Identical twins are a fluke and don't run in families......

Non identical twins however do run in families, because it's a gene where the mother produces more than one egg at a time.....

So if you have non identical twins in your family.......

You have a big chance of having twins!
References :
I have identical twins!
