Filing as an independent is not a choice you are allowed to make. You are an independent student if, and only if, you are 24 years old, a graduate student, married, a veteran, orphaned, or a few other options that are all listed on the application. Otherwise, you must provide your parents' information, or else the application will be rejected as incomplete.
References :
Spent 5 years working at the Federal Student Aid Information Center.

I bet that filing independently would be the best way for you to get the most financial aid. Also, if you have any big purchases-- textbooks for classes, furniture for a dorm room, or a television or computer for college, maybe-- that you need to make, buy those before you file and it may be enough to drain away a little of whatever savings you have. The less money you've got, the more aid you're eligible for. I'd also recommend applying for any scholarships you can find or are eligible for. Contact the college's financial aid department to ask what they sponsor and check out websites like www.fastweb.com and studentaid.ed.gov.
