i am 17 and looking at getting an entry level Digital SLR camera. I would like something which isn’t at the bottom of the range as i am aiming to learn how to use my camera to the best of its ability. I would like to spend not much more than AU$1500
I have been quoted $1540 for the Canon 550D Digital SLR camera twin IS lens kit (18-55mm IS and 55-250 IS) however my cousin and i will be buying two cameras (may not be the exact model) on the same day in the same store so we will be getting a discount for buying two.
My parents have a Canon film SLR camera which they have a 28-90mm and 100-300mm lens for which i can use also, but i think i would like to have my own lenses as well as interchanging with theirs occasionally.
basically, what i want to know is do you think this is a good idea, and any comments or tips you can give me from your knowledge and experience.

You may be able to get a small discount getting 2 of them but I would also shop around and see who has the best deals. Being in the US, I am not sure where is best to shop where you live.

The 550D is a brand new Canon model and so discounts will be tougher to find since it is in high demand.

First of all, there are 2 kinds of twins, identical and fraternal (non-identical). Identical twins just happen spontaneously, and are not hereditary, which means if you have them in your family you are no more likely than anyone else to have them yourself. Fraternal twins have a small hereditary component, which means that women who have them in their family have a slightly higher-than-average chance of having them too. However, since it is the woman who has to release multiple eggs for fraternal twins to occur, having twins on the man’s side has no impact at all. So your chances of having twins are no higher than anyone else’s.

my mom is pregnant, and she has already had 6, (none twins or triplets or anything) she is 40 years old, which I know increases the chance of having more than one, I was just wondering what the chances are. Thank you!

Your mum has a better than usual chance of having twins due to a couple of different factors;

1. The more children/pregnancies you have had, the more likely you are to have twins, regardless of your age.

2. Women over 35 and under 45 are more likely to have twins than younger women.

Can’t really tell you exactly how much of a better chance she has, as there’s a number of other factors which also influence the likelihood, like diet, nationality, twins in the family etc.

I see a lot of people who are pretty early in their pregnancies who say they are having twins… maybe they had early ultrasounds, but my doctor didn’t order one for me until 20 weeks. I am wondering if it’s possible for doctors to tell a woman is having twins some other way, like HcG levels, blood test, etc? Anyone know if this is possible, or is an ultrasound necessary?

You can NOT tell for sure from HCG levels - elevated levels "can" be an indicator of twins, but the range is so vast that no doctor would base it off this information. I was the opposite, my HCG was within normal range for a singleton . . .

We discovered our twins at 7 weeks via ultrasound. We transferred 2 embryos through IVF and were checking the pregnancy, I also had a bit of spotting and cramping that made my doctor order the test.

Some women get early ultrasounds if they are not sure how far along they are and some end up getting them due to issues like spotting or cramping.

The other way would be to discover 2 heartbeats on the doppler . . . but even then, most doctors would order an ultrasound to confirm. There are additional risks that go with a twin pregnancy and an ultrasound is a great way to determine the health of the twins, positions, etc . . .
