What’s the reason behind having twins? heridetary or just plain coincidence?
Some women carry a gene that makes them prone to hyper ovulate while others have twins by chance. So, some women naturally release more than one egg at a time that happen to get fertilized and some women have an egg get fertilized that happens to split. There are also women who undergo fertility treatments and have multiples and that increases her chances for twins too. If twins run in the family on the women’s side, or she has already had a set of twins, her chances are increased of having twins too.

Almost always hereditary. There are usually twins on either mommy or daddy’s side.
When two sperm fertilize one egg you have identical twins, when two sperm fertilize two different eggs there you have fraturnal twins
EDIT: Identical twins are always the same sex, Fraturnal twins can be different sexes

something along the lines of 2 sperms fertilizing a single egg and making 2 embryos or something like that

Along with hereditary reasons the older the mothers age increases the possibility of having twins.

I agree with littlelo.. just would add that there is no (proven) hereditary factor for the splitting of eggs, but that there is a known factor for the production of multiple eggs.

Usually twins are born every 2nd or 3rd generation, specially if there are twins on one side of the family.
Or you can ovulate and one egg splits for "identical twins" or 2 eggs become fertilised from 2 sperm.
