How far along were you and how? Did they find 2 heartbeats? Or did you not know until you had a sonogram?

I am 13 weeks pregnant and Ive always had a fear of having twins, i DO NOT want twins but of course if i did i would love them both. I have a history of twins running in my family including myself being a twin as well. So i am just curious. I have my first doctors appointment tomorrow.

Just curious…Do you not want to have a twins because you are a twin or because it’s so hard to handle two?

I was 5 weeks when my doctor called and said my HCG was way too high for how far I was in my pregnancy. She had me come in the same day as HCG results and via U/S we saw two sacs. Confirmed the heartbeats at 7 weeks.

Unfortunately, none of the information you provided to us would tell us if you are likely to have twins or not. However if you have any twins in your family, then it would be more likely, but in all reality, anyone could have twins.

The person I would be with is a twin, and his sister is a twin as well, but the baby died a few hours after she was born due to medical complications. My mother carried twins for two months, but miscarried because she was in an accident.

if both sides of the family are twins then yes. my cousins are twins and my partners cousins are twins so were thinking we mite get it too, apparently it skips a generation on both sides and were the next generation! baby dust

Ok I think I am anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks along. I have been very tired and it already it looks like I have a baby bump. I have also gained 4 pounds. I know you gain one to 5 during the first trimester. Can I get bloated that much or am I having twins?

You can’t be 2 weeks pregnant technically. Pregnancy is calculated from the 1st day of your last period so the day you miss you period (28 days is a usual cycle) then you are counted as being 4 weeks pregnant, ie 2 weeks from conception. Its far too early either way to have a bump and nobody on the internet can possibly know if you are having twins. Even if you were having twins they would be the size of a grain of rice at this stage.

Just book in and see your doctor for antenatal care, they will soon confirm if its one or 2 babies.

well most likely they will have their own placenta, but doctors have proven that they can share one, and sometimes they can fuse together. mostly what this means is that they are probably non-identical (although some identical twins have their own sac and I believe they then share a placenta). Congrats!

They would have to do an u/s to see if they are sharing a placenta or not. They can be identical and have their own sac but I think it’s more likely they share a placenta then. If they have their own sac and own placenta, then chances are they are non-identical. basically the only way they will know 100% if they are or not is with an amnio (which can risk the babie’s life and should only be done if medically necessary), or if they share a sac (then they would KNOW they were identical).

Is there any way to increase my chances of having twins. My mother told me that an old wives tale says that drinking more milk can increase your chances but i am lactose intolerant so that is out of the question.

There are some African cultures, I believe, that have a diet heavy in yams - they have the highest rate of twinning in the world. However, I’ve heard some speculation about whether they really work or not or if it’s genetics that are at work with this particular group of people.

Other factors that contribute to having twins:
age 40 and over
being slightly overweight
having a positive family history, on either side

As far as dairy, the study I found compared vegans with non-vegans and people who ate meat. The vegans were less likely to conceive twins, but it looks like the non-vegans and meat eaters who drank milk conceived twins more than the vegans, but about the same rate as each other. Assuming you’re not a vegan, I’m not sure this study has much bearing.

Anyway, you can also take fertility drugs like Clomid, etc. if you want to go down that road, or even do IVF.

Fertility drugs increase your chances by more than anything else except genetics.

Im 27 weeks pregnant with twins, a boy and a girl. Im so excited, but i’ve started to worry that my bump is too small. You can tell i’m pregnant but i only look very small and i always thought you are bigger with twins.

This does not automatically make me fat!

I’ve gained a few pounds but you can’t really tell as because of my height i have always looked alot slimmer than what i actually am. Might this be why i aren’t showing as much with my babies, the doctor hasn’t raised any problems but you can’t help but worry sometimes.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with the size you are; your doctor doesn’t seemed worried about it therefore neither should you. Every woman carries the weight differently, my goodness I wish I were built like you instead of a 5′0 med frame.. all of my weight goes straight to my tummy just relax, if everything is okay everywhere else then your size shouldn’t matter.

Regardless of what you eat, your odds of having identical twins (not hereditary) are 1 in 285.

Fraternal twins occur when two eggs are fertilized. This means the mom releases two eggs instead of one. Therefore the mother’s family history is very relevant and increases your odds if you have fraternal twins on that side.
