Usually twins are born every 2nd or 3rd generation, specially if there are twins on one side of the family.
Or you can ovulate and one egg splits for "identical twins" or 2 eggs become fertilised from 2 sperm.
References :
I agree with littlelo.. just would add that there is no (proven) hereditary factor for the splitting of eggs, but that there is a known factor for the production of multiple eggs.
References :
Along with hereditary reasons the older the mothers age increases the possibility of having twins.
References :
Some women carry a gene that makes them prone to hyper ovulate while others have twins by chance. So, some women naturally release more than one egg at a time that happen to get fertilized and some women have an egg get fertilized that happens to split. There are also women who undergo fertility treatments and have multiples and that increases her chances for twins too. If twins run in the family on the women's side, or she has already had a set of twins, her chances are increased of having twins too.
References :
Almost always hereditary. There are usually twins on either mommy or daddy's side.
When two sperm fertilize one egg you have identical twins, when two sperm fertilize two different eggs there you have fraturnal twins
EDIT: Identical twins are always the same sex, Fraturnal twins can be different sexes
References :
Anybody who can get pregnant could have twins, but it is never likely for anyone, regardless of family history.

Overall odds of any twins, identical or fraternal, are about 1 in 80. It does not skip a generation, as some have suggested. That is an old wives tale. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes it skips several. You never know when twins will occur.

When fraternal twins run in families, it comes from the female line because it has to do with a woman releasing more than one egg in a cycle. It can pass from a mother to a daughter and so on, but it's no guarantee of twins. Your father's side has nothing to do with it. Fraternal twins can also happen randomly.

There is no evidence to support that identical twins run in families. It is too random. The stat is about 1 in 325 live births. Scientists have not been able to isolate the moment of the split of the egg, so it is unknown why it happens. They do sometimes run in individuals, meaning that a woman who has had twins is more likely to produce them again than if she had a singleton pregnancy. This is also true of fraternal twins.
References :
My Mum is a non-identical twin. Her mother had 3 sets of non-identical twins. My Dad had non-identical twin brothers. I've been pregnant 3 times and have never had twins. The only other person in my family who was pregnant with twins was my cousin but unfortunately she lost one.
References :
12 weeks 1 day pregnant with 1 baby
